As a growing boy Theophilus had successively aspired to nine different life-careers -- including those of saint, archeologist, detective, lover, actor, and rascal. At the age of twenty nine he finds himself engaged in tutoring jobs in Newport Rhode Island. He discovers that Newport -- like ancient Troy -- contains nine different cities, including that of the once important seaport, that of the beautiful eighteenth century, that of the fabulously wealthy summer resort, of the servants who tended it and the parasites who preyed on it, and that of the ordinary American town. Theophilus's nine ambitions and Newport's nine cities get mixed up in adventures variously dangerous, tender, and hilarious.

Like other Wilder novels, this one is constantly entertaining and thought provoking.
